Smart Make-up Tips for Ladies Over 40~Beauty on a Budget!

I'm 54 years old. I've never lied about my age. Well, Okay I have, but I was under 21 and wanted to get in bad : ). Now, I'm always looking for ways to stay young and look my very best for my age. I'm proud of who I am. But there are those days when I wake up, brush my teeth and look in the mirror, only to find some lady I don't recognize looking back at me.

Yes, there is morning Kathy. She barely resembles daytime or evening Kathy. For as long as I've been wearing makeup I have been taking out morning Kathy long before anyone sets eyes on me. I used to spend a fortune on make-up and essentials. But in this economy, even my face is on a budget.

So I thought this would be a great post. A before and after make-up session. How to get a look with great products for meager dollars. From smoky eyes to sexy pouty lips. Get ready to turn heads and save a buck or two at the same time. Looking haute has never been easier or cheaper.

Okay, here goes...this is morning Kathy, lines and all. I've been told this is natural beauty. Hummm...not buying!

Okay, here's the line up:
Your cheapest and most essential beauty product? Noxema. Yes, the old stand by face wash. My daughters swear by it. At 37 (twins) they could pass for 25 easy. And at a cost of about $4.00 for the big jar, it's a tried and true major bargain.

Cleansing and moisturizing your skin is number one. My face cleansing regime now, consist of Avon's ANEW ultimate age repair skin care line. The night cream and the day cream with an SPF 25, both for around $34.00 each.

The contouring eye system for those crows feet and fine lines, about $ 32.00. I've used products that cost far more with much less results. And the great thing about these products is Avon runs special campaign brochure prices all the time. (No, I don't sell any of these products : ).

I'd just like to add that, especially at our age : ) the face is not the only thing that needs attention. I love the age repair total body cream, about $30.00.

Next, is using good make up. I didn't say costly! What I love? What works for me? And again, I used to buy insanely priced cosmetics. Now...for my liner, I love LA Colors Auto Eyeliner, retractable pencil in black/brown. I think black is harsh on anyone. Beautiful color that goes on with ease.

I also love Avon Glimmer Sticks eyeliner pencils in an array of colors. I don't venture out with color often. But on special occasions I do add a touch of color to my lower and inner lids. I only use color as an accent. Not for a complete line.

Revlon Colorstay Mineral Matte Foundation in perfect colors. About $11.99 @ Target

I can't say enough about Almay one coat dial up Mascara. In one word...awesome! Only about $ 7.99

LA Colors 12 color Eye Shadow Pallet for about $6.00. I get the shades browns and shades of grays. I use whatever color suits my mood on a given day : ). Both pallets have white shadow for highlighting.

Cover Girl 3 shades of blush for about $6.00. This is something I rarely use, but on special occasions I like to change up the look a bit and add a little flush to my skin tone.

Remmel natural Bronzer for about $4.00 Amazing product!

NYC Lip Gloss... $4.00 and under. I couldn't live without this sleek little tube of lusciousness. I rarely use lipstick color.

Maybelline concealer stick. A MUST! About $5.00 anywhere.
And last, but not least Maybelline eye brow pencil. $3.00 for twin pack. Yes, the old red twin pack brow and liner pencil your mama used. The best cosmetic in the world. And here's why...

If I were shipwrecked on a dessert island and had a choice of what 3 items of makeup I could have for the rest of my life, what would they be?

#1. Maybelline brow pencil because I can color my brows, line my eyes and my lips! This was a tip from a great makeup artist in the 70's and I still use it today.

#2. Can't live without my concealer.

#3. Mascara because your UNFINISHED without it ladies! It makes me crazy when I see a woman completely made up and then her lashes are bare : (.

So, my boyfriend tells me all the things he wants to plan for Valentines Day and I say "Babe you are so romantic." and then he say's. " by the way, I'll help with the frosting leftovers!" Ah ha! He just wants the sweets and I don't mean me! Spoken like a true man! So I started thinking, what am I going to bake for valentines day? ....here are a few ideas to get your creative groove going...And yes, I will let him lick the bowl! After all it will be Valentine's Day : ).

You don’t have to be Chinese to celebrate Chinese New Year. You just have to love a great party and having fun! It doesn’t hurt if you adore the culture and foods as I do. Chinese New Year is the 23rd of January this year. I think a small get together to bring in the lunar year is in order : ).

I love the vibrant colors of red black and gold and I love that this is the year of the Dragon. The most colorful symbol in all of Asia. I’ve always wanted to run and jump under the giant dragon as it passed : ).

I love the culture so much and when we lived in Los Angeles, My husband and I visited China town often. We actually made a couple of the parades. We had a special restaurant there. Quan Mann’s. It's where we had gone since we had dated. And we always planned and devoted an entire day and an evening to enjoy all it had to offer. Those were special and very romantic times. We loved walking through the town during the day and dining on the restaurant's beautiful balcony at night.

This year I’m planning to celebrate with a spread of “good luck” dishes that include, fish, oranges and lots of noodles. I have a beautiful new wok I’ve been itching to try out.

I’m going to dress the table with a black cloth and some gold confetti. I think adding some red candles will just set it off. I’ll place red envelopes (leisee) stuffed with chocolate coins and my wish for good luck at one end of the table. I’ll wrap the chopsticks in a red napkin and tie them together with gold and black skinny ribbon. Add a bowl of fortune cookies, some balloons and paper lanterns and I think the table will look great. I have miscellaneous oriental dishes I never get to use, so this is the perfect occasion to pull them out.

For cocktails I can’t go wrong with Mai Tais.
And for games, find your partner is fun. I found this game on line. But instead of buying cards, I will just print duplicate Chinese pictures of zodiac signs, animals or other symbols. You Pin one of each of the pictures to each guest’s back and send them off to find their partner. But they can’t tell what's on each others backs. They must first figure out who they are by asking questions which can be answered only by Yes or No. How fun is this?

Another fun game is teaching your friends and family to use chop sticks. Those that have already mastered this won’t be worried, but they better hope they are skilled in eating rice with them, because that’s the trick. Once everyone thinks they have it down, you serve the rice. The guest that has the least amount of rice on the table and their bibs, wins! " Chop Stick Wars" : ).

I can't wait!

I Just Realized I Have ADD

Yes, Adult Dating Disorder is a real syndrome. Look I haven't been on the market in...well, let's just say I was wearing bell bottoms and beads : ). So fast forward 30 some odd years and ten years after the passing of my husband. As much as I like my independence of recent years, I realized how alone, alone really is. So, I have decided to get back out there and find a little happiness for myself. My kids are grown and it's time to focus on me a bit.

Looking for a love connection mid life is not fun. So, after doing a bit of browsing and reading on the subject, I knew the dating scene of today was not going to be for me. OMG! It's scary out there! And then there's all the new things you have to consider when dating now days. The movie Fatal Attraction comes to mind : (.

I thought about cyber dating, which is synonymous with blind dating. A crap shoot in other words. I prefer WYSIWYG scenario. I like knowing what I'm dealing with. For me, all of this just looked like a long and painful journey I wasn't ready to take. The days of peace, love the one you're with and rock and roll are gone forever.

The thing is, I have loved in my lifetime and been loved. I am not in a hurry to deal with all those new butterfly in the stomach feelings, like a 20 year old. Been there, done that. I'm just looking for the right guy to take me on the rest of my journey here with meaning and hopefully a little fun, too.

I decided that going green was the best and safest path to take. Sometimes the best route traveled, is the one you're the most familiar with. And so, I decided to recycle. Get in touch with old friends and see if anyone is single now, as I am. Okay, yeah I'm saying old boyfriends ; ). There's much to be said for the ingenuity of the hippie generation.

And there's much to be said for old beaus that remember what strawberry hill taste like and recognizes the word bitchin' still has a place in the American vocabulary. So here I am back in the dating scene and I have to tell you I have ADD (adult dating disorder)!

Seems I'm not really good at this : ). I wish I could share with you all of the hilarious conversations and dating disasters so far ; ). There are new rules...and with older guys, come a few draw backs.... major baggage (collateral). Wow, I have to also admit I had a few illusions about it and maybe a fantasy or two that my knight and shinning armour would ride up and rescue me from the depths of singleness hell . Yeah, none of us look the same either. I just wasn't ready for all of this. But here I am a fish out of water looking for my soul mate in unfamiliar territory.

And worst of all. I've been told by my daughter that my kids will need tag numbers, descriptions of the date in question and a detailed map of where we are going so they can find my body should things go awry : ). She turned into her Grandmother the minute I started dating.

After only a few months...I'm beginning to think there is something to be said for the single life. But all in all there's even more to be said for the age of technology...a long distance relationship...dating with a cell phone, a glass of chardonnay and my feet up. I'm liking him best! : D.

New Years Resolutions for 2012

As I begin this new year, I've made a few promises to myself as well as a commitment for changes that I hope to make in my life this coming year.

It seems cats do it...

Dogs love doing it...

But for some reason, I quit getting any of these...

I have a confession to make. I haven't slept well in 15 years. I'm going to address this problem and go out and buy everything known to man to help me get a good nights sleep. It's beginning to catch up with me. : )

Second, I'm going to EXERCISE. I'm sorry to use such profanity, but I had to. Yes, my idea of exercise is more like Kim's : ). But, it's official...I HAVE TO DO IT and unfortunately by myself. Well at least on my own two feet!

Three, I'm going to open up my heart and say yes more. Take chances. Let go. Be impulsive! Spontaneous! Somethings just don't need a plan : ).

Four, I'm going to finish the novel I'm writing and get it published You won't be able to put it down. And of course it's fiction ; ).

Last but not least, and hardest of all, I'm going to try to love and forgive those who don't deserve it! Do I need to say there's a man at the top of this list...

Starting the New Year Off Right...By Saving Where You Can!

Everyone that knows me, knows I'm a super saver girl. I love shopping and I love saving money even more. I comp everything I can. I sometimes get a look from the cashier because she doesn't believe the money I'm saving, but hey I don't care as long as I can, I will save every dime I can.

This was my last grocery shopping trip. I paid 85.00 for groceries worth about 190.00. Yeah, right. Love it! So, I just wanted to tell everyone about comp shopping at Wal Mart. Here's how I do it...I gather all my sale ads/papers on line from various grocery stores. I make my shopping list out. Circle everything I need or want from the sale ads and hit the store with my ads. You really don't even need the ads anymore, but be honest. They know most of the ads too. Also watch your sizes and facts, like whether apples are by the pound or the price is for eaches. Things like that will trip you up and throw off the list. Here is just an example of my saving this last trip:

Oranges .58 cents each I got them 20 for a $1.00 Yes, I said dollar. I use many Hispanic store ads that boast tremendous savings on especially produce and meat.

Pork Chops were 2.98 per pound and I paid $1.00 per pound
Boneless skinless Chicken Breast were 9.97 for the package and I paid a little under $4.00 for the package.

White onions were 1.89 a pound and I got 3 pounds for $1.00 (I actually got 6 pounds of them at this price because I can chop them and freeze them for quick, handy use.

Tomatoes were almost 2.00 per pound and I got them for 3 pounds for $1.00 (again I bought 6 pounds so I could make delicious homemade salsa).

So, if you haven't already started comp shopping, you definitely need to do so. You can also use your coupons. But so many times coupons have catches to them. You have to buy certain sizes or can't use them in conjunction with something else. So get out there and reclaim your dollars! Save big this year! By the way, you can also comp merchandise as long as you know who has it for less.

My daughter Leslie made a complete line of body products as gifts that are amazing! She has taken soft skin to a whole new level. Body butter, lip balm, foot scrub, cuticle cream, and this incredible sugar scrub.

OMGosh my skin is so soft and my tootsies have never felt so good. I told her she could totally sell this stuff. I'm just blown away that she made it all by hand. I'm also thankful I didn't sneak a taste when she was in the kitchen cooking up all these potions and lotions ; ).

We're naturalist. We love herbs and mother nature. We like handmade with care and knowing what's in the products we use. We can make soap and candles and now a skin care line. Were good to go. Have I told you lately that my kids are phenomenal!

This years buche de noel was made by my daughter Leslie. She was busy this Christmas season. And here it is. Not a great picture (phone pic), but none the less it was scrumptious and beautiful! Yes, those are handmade meringue mushrooms. YUM!

This is my granddaughter Kennedy. She is 9 years old and has grown her hair out for the past couple of years for "Locks of Love" a wonderful organization to help others who don't have hair due to illness. God has blessed us with this child who has a giving and loving heart. I am so proud of her! By the way her Auntie Leslie gave her that sassy new hair cut.

Holiday Top Tens and a Funny Story

First I want to tell you that I'm going to be doing "Top Ten Tuesday!" Every week, starting January 1, 2012. This means the top ten things that make it that week ; ). But for now, it's all about the holidays : ).

The first Christmas I spent with my husband in our home in Long Beach California in 1979, we were excited to be in our own place. Hal went overboard with Christmas, as he actually did every year. And when I say overboard I mean extreme! There was barely room to walk in our living room.

And when Christmas day came, the kids and I were a bit overwhelmed by all the gifts. It was a great thing for the kids. As for me...not so much. Just about every present was for the house! A new state of the art microwave (remember those giant things?). New dishes, new cookware...well you get the picture.

I however, drug my sweet kids all over every mall in Southern Cali finding the perfect gifts for my guy. All personal. Yeah, boy was I ticked. But I smiled as if I was happy about it all and so the next year, more of the same.

And on out 5th Christmas together, I blew up like a spoiled child! I said, "I'm not married to this freaking house, I married to you! I get appliances for Christmas every year!"

And he said, I was buying the things you told me you loved when we first married. And I thought about it. Yep, I said it! I had told him I couldn't wait to get our own place and fill it with everything I love for the family. It would be my Christmas forever.

I however, did not mean literally forever! I can say after that Christmas, I never got another appliance as a gift ; } He actually became an amazingly thoughtful gifter. Moral of the story: Be very careful about what you say to your husband. There's no telling what you might get for Christmas forever! : ).

Count Down To Christmas!

TGIF everyone! The count down is getting closer. And as the big day nears, I'm breathing a sigh of relief to finally have all my shopping finished and Christmas dinner planned.

We decided to go with a traditional English dinner, consisting of prime rib, Brussels sprouts, baby carrots in honey butter glaze, smashed potatoes, brown gravy, Victorian dressing, horseradish cream, Bearnaise sauce and Yorkshire pudding. For dessert a beautiful Buche de Noel (yule log). How jolly good is that?

The little things...

I just danced for almost an hour this morning with very few short breaks. Just long enough to catch my breath. I'm trying to stay on my regimen of dancing and eating right which hasn't really been easy with all the holiday hoopla.

And believe me, I've fallen of the wagon more than once lately. It's more of a run away wagon right now. I have a feeling by post Christmas, I'll be chasing it down quick! : )

But I am not going to beat myself up, because I've done amazingly well and little by little I'm remembering who I was 30 years ago and who I am today and I like them both. The only thing that changed was my attitude about myself.

I've still got a long way to go as far as I am concerned. But to hear that I'm just as beautiful at 53 as I was at 23 is more than just nice... Yes, he's a big fat liar. But it's still nice.

It totally encourages me to keep going. It reminds me that there are men out there that appreciate and want a real woman. They like curves and love someone they can relate to.

I have to tell you I'm always going to have the curves. It's just the way God made me. The skinny straight boy figure is just not happening with me. I'm fine with that. And I haven't heard any complaints.; )

Even though I want to lose more weight, I can honestly say that I wouldn't want to be anyone else. And that's a good thing.

I just need to stop sweating the little things, because all the things that matter I think I have found right here inside of me. I just forgot they were there for a while, until someone reminded me: )

Beautiful Centerpiece

I found this gorgeous centerpiece on the web. I love this. I wanted the instructions on how to make it but I can't remember where I got it, so It looks to me like they used a cone and wrapped it in silver tinsel garland and then hot glued the balls on. It could be any color or size you like. It looks like it's about 1 1/2 feet high so, a cone about that size and maybe a 9 foot of garland and 80 or so balls. Plus any balls for laying around the tree if you want that look. I know that sounds like a lot, but you can go to the dollar tree and get the tubes of balls. Also wait and hit the after Christmas sales and make one for next year. I will continue to search for the source of this beautiful tree centerpiece for credit. Oh, I forgot, the ribbon...maybe one 9 foot spool, unless you want to buy just enough for the top? I intend to make the bow and lay the rest of the ribbon among the balls on the table. What do you think?

Are You Ready for ....Them?

You know what I'm talking about. House guest! They come for the holidays and if you've ever seen the movies "Mad House" or "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" you've got a pretty good idea what you're in for this Christmas.

Over the years, my daughters and I have become entertaining guru "go to" girls, so to speak for friends and family in need of entertaining and host help.

I thought this would be a great time to lend a few suggestions straight from the Griswold Family bag of tricks for holiday survival.

Do I need to say plenty of ...

This was my husbands pet peeve! I don't care how good your ice maker is. Just buy an extra few bags of ice and throw it in the freezer. Believe me no one wants the job of running out to get ice.

Keep a full frig with your guest fav fast fix foods, such as prepared foods ready to heat and serve. Lots off eggs and herbs and veggies for late night omelets and a salad.

Wine and cheese and crackers sitting around in the evenings is a great way to take the edge off your guests hunger while you're preparing dinner.

Make sure your guest room or designated rooms for guest are ready, clean and well prepared.

You can never have too many...

With crisp clean cases and...

and plenty of freshly laundered sheets.

Have your bath and guest bathrooms sparkling and ready with extra personal items.

During the holidays everyone tends to get in a hurry and we all forget important things, so it's nice to have these things on hand just in case...

It's really nice to leave a basket of goodies in the room or bath.

Extra hand towels are an absolute necessity.

If guest are bringing pets and you don't want this to happen with your expensive down comforter...

Have these handy and let your guest know they are for their pets. Anything will make a pet bed...even an old blanket folded on the floor.

Use side boards, buffets, and old dresser,even folding tables draped with cloths and serve buffet style. Use everyday utensils to hold silverware, stack plates, fold napkins. Mix and match what you already have in a fun way. And label the bottoms of serving dishes so you know exactly what goes where. Add greenery and lay shiny silver and red balls around the table.

You don't have to spend a small fortune on holiday style. To get the most bang for the buck, think about ribbons and pine cones, greenery, glass ornaments and candles. Buy linens in white and use a yard or two of reasonable fabric in colors or patterns to drape your table. Use food color and water with floating candles and cranberries floating in goblets or hurricanes.

Cheap and beautiful!

Keep your menu simple, such as two sides, a main and a salad.

And keep your time spent at home and not running around all over to entertain your guest. Get out the games, play charades... After all, isn't it what the holidays are all about... being together. And spending your time together.

And when guest leave and I think it's a nice gesture to send them off with homemade goodies for the road.

Finally, if you're going to do this...

These go in a bowl and are taken to another residence for safe keeping.

Always serve coffee for those who have had a little too much fun ; ).

Now breathe in, breathe out. De-stress and enjoy your loved ones and always, always be thankful you have them!

It's time at our house to start baking up memories and some of the cutest real estate on the block! Some of my fondest memories of Christmastime with my kids when they were growing up in California, is making gingerbread houses. And now I do it with my grand kids. I have to say that children are amazing when it comes to creative and imaginative ideas for dressing up their creations. My kids and grand kids always managed to nibble at their houses until they were a bit tattered ; ). I hope you make the time this year to sit down with your kids and/or grand kids and make memories of your own. They'll never forget it!

One of our family traditions at Christmas is the yule log or buche de noel. I love making these for the holiday. They have a big wow factor for so little work. My favorite part may actually be making the meringue mushrooms : ). They are really easier than they look to make and always the hit of the Christmas party. I usually make extra sweet mushrooms for the guest to nibble on. And they go fast! Last year, the grand kids and I made these great crafts with plastic cups, construction paper, markers, glue gun and scissors (googly eyes optional). We put candies and goodies inside of the corn and the turkey. And we made turkeys with googly eyes from the cups. Each feather represented what the kids were thankful for. That was the best part. And thankful for them doesn't even begin to say it! I love these guys!

Yes! Into cute jeans, smaller size, and ready to start running. Just got my clothes order today and I'm so happy! Everything is smaller and it fits. The best part is my pants could be a size smaller. I concede I will never get rid of my J Lo bootie. That has been a lifetime battle. I just want to feel good again. And I can live with the minor flaws.

Okay, I need to step up the metabolism. Maybe I better start with walking first, but I'm so excited. I've started dancing too. I like it much better than any of the fads out there and I can just put the music on and dance my housework away ; ).

We did find the belly dancing video again...This should be hilarious! I'll make sure I'm alone before I make a fool out of myself with this one. You know what they say...Never do anything you don't want to explain to the paramedics ; ).

A Christmas Past

We live in an old home. When my husband died I bought this old home and slowly but surely refurbished it. It's a far cry from what we used to have, but it's home now.

There are so many things that have changed since these Christmas Pics were taken. But it's still an old house. And these bring back memories of holidays past. These are so old fashioned. I don't have a post ready for today so I thought I'd show you these pictures from about 8 years ago. Everything has come a long way since then, but I still love these pics.

We normally have between 6 and 8 trees in the house in all the rooms. And each has a different theme. Every theme is about love and family.

I still hang ornaments on our main tree that are from my mom and grandmother and my children's handmade ornies from their childhood. Some of these pics aren't the best. But as you can see I collect nutcrackers. And they line the book shelves across the top.

Each year my grandsons get to pic one from my collection, for their collection. And every year, my beautiful granddaughter gets to pick one house from my village for her own collection. This is what it is all about.

The large Christmas village collection went to my daughter Malissa and the Santa collection went to my Son Jayson. There are now so many other memories I look forward to making. ; ). I'm happy we have new/old family members to share with this year. How blessed we are. ; )

Okay guys, get ready to dazzle your friends and family with a little turkey trivia. Yes, I know it’s lame. But everyone knows I’m a little on the nerdy side when it comes to the love of knowledge!

Thanksgiving will be here before you know it and it’s time to get on the ball and start planning for the holiday season. Time to make a list for all the turkey and the trimmings and prep your finery for the big event. T-tom, as we call him at our house has some very interesting facts. Here are just a few:

Turkey Trivia

The first American Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621 between the Pilgrims and the Native Americans who taught the Pilgrims how to survive off the
environment.

There are many thoughts how the turkey got its name. One such theory was that Christopher Columbus thought the bird looked like a peacock and since the East Indian word for peacock was "tuka," this bird's name transitioned from "tuka" to "turkey." Makes sense. And on the other hand, when a turkey is scared, instead of saying "gobble, gobble," it makes a "turk, turk, turk" sound. No brainer here. Take your choice.

Wild turkeys occasionally spend the night up in a tree.

A female turkey is called a hen while the male is called a tom.

A hen does not say gobble, gobble. Instead, they say click, click. That must be some sound fest when both sexes are simultaneously striving for attention.

A mature turkey has approximately 3,500 feathers.

Wild turkeys can run 25 miles per hour and fly up to 55 miles per hour. However, commercially raised turkeys cannot run at all, or fly.

The heaviest turkey ever weighed toppled the scales at 86 pounds.

A turkey can have a heart attack if it becomes overly startled; turkeys living near an area where the sound barrier was broken dropped dead from the shock.

Turkeys have a fantastic sense of hearing but have no external ears. Hmm! Are the ear holes hiding somewhere under those 3,500 feathers? Only the turkey knows for sure but he is not telling.

Thanksgiving is Right Around the Corner...

I'm already thinking of how I want the table to look. This is definatley a "me " thing, because my kids don't care. My girls do to an extent. My son just wants to know it will be traditional and I'm not going to serve anything that might be good for him ; ).

We have changed things up a bit the last ten years or so, because we had to get over a void...a vacancy. But it's time to start our traditions again and move forward. I am thankful for my children's sakes that our family is expanding it's love. I hope one day everyone will be able to join us at our family table, too ; ).

I love going all out and giving our table a special touch. I always have and I still love doing so. Down to the kids table. I love giving them a special place and letting them know just how thankful I am for them.

I'm a bit of an overachiever : ). I like the oohs and aahs. But mostly, I just love doing things for my family. I was made for this.

And although I've done many tables over the years. And my taste has changed a lot, I still come back to that traditional table where the turkey holds the place of honor. I thought I'd share a few ideas for Thanksgiving decorating and tablescapes. I hope this post inspires you--

Below of course is my favorite by far. Because of my Grandson Hayden, lights stay up in the dining room at night. He didn't want the lights to go away at Christmas when he was little. So I made sure he has them all year long, if only a few; ).

I'm so excited! Tomorrow is our annual pumpkin patch trip. Afterward, we will all go eat at my daughter Malissa's house. Leslie is making Dorito casserole (which I have never had before) and monster cookies.

It will also be time for the "Great Pumpkin" carving! So, many pumpkins will be bought tomorrow to be sliced and diced into some very creative faces.

I can hardly wait to show you the pics. Today, I have lots to do to get ready. I get to have all my grand kids over night! We're going to have fun!

It's 44 degrees here in northeast Texas this morning! And does it ever feel good. The windows are open for the first time since Summer began and the leaves are whipping through the trees in the wind.

Our first cold front came through last night and set off the fall storm season, Our second severe weather season here in Texas. I hope this one is a mild one and we just jump right into snow! At least I can dream.

It's been too hot over the summer and the trees are still a bit bewildered. But color has started to peak through the brown downed country side. I going to put on a pot of soup to waft through the house and enjoy this beautiful crisp Autumn day.

Funny Farm, the back story...

Since storms are headed our way and and a front is moving in...I'll just leave you peeps with a re post and get off the computer. This is lightening country : ).

REMEMBER TO TURN OFF MUSIC BEFORE PLAYING VIDEO.

So often I am asked the question, "Why Kathy's Funny Farm?" Well, actually I've never been asked that question, but for some reason I just really feel compelled to explain my very silly, silly blog name.

So here it is... I'm originally from Sunny Southern California. L.A. Yes, Big City girl, who for some reason which seems to escape me right now, moved to Texas many years ago with my husband, three beautiful kids, a Guinea pig, three cats, numerous hamsters, a bird and a Basset hound.

Oh yea, I think it was the better life in the country thing...Well that's probably not true, but we'll just say that's what it was ; ). When we arrived here I said, "Take me home now!" There were cows and chickens everywhere. Bait shops that sold videos, worms, sandwiches and pizza all at the same counter!

My husband developed an accent when we hit Texas soil because when people saw the California tag, they were immediately rude to us. Now, looking back, I understand and know, it is because we were (to them) the crazy, loony, California, money hungry, no morals, leftest, liberal, hippie lovin' idiots I've heard the natives talk about from time to time.

Had no idea then :~) Anyway, a movie came out not long after called, "Funny Farm" with Chevy Chase. It was a movie about a couple like us who moved from the big city to the very town we live in ( not really) but same difference.

One in the same little country town where everybody knows everybody and their business too. They didn't like new comers. They didn't like the way we talked. Which was apparently very fast. Even the mailman hated us and I'm still not sure why.

But I'll let that one go, given the postal thing and all. So that's the story and here's the clips of Funny Farm to go with it. By the way, it's a lovely town we live in by the lake :~) and 20 years later we have been accepted, so to speak. Well, more so my kids who grew up here.

And me, well, I'm still a California girl at heart; free spirit turned yuppie, turned proud Grammie of three and I have come to love and care deeply for the people we've grown with in this little town of ours. I've even adopted the Southernism Y'all as a second person pronoun in which I catch myself often using.

It seems everything that was once out of the realm of sane for us, is now the norm. I think they call it the Stockholm syndrome. As for the mailman...he still hates us ;~)

This is just one of those days where I can't type. One typo after another and I don't always spell check. Apparently I should if I'm going to continue to do this. I've been writing like Ricky Ricardo talks. Good grief, I've rewritten this post twice! I don't know what's wrong with me today. Maybe I need to put on my glasses? New Cake Trends

Yes, this is a cake!

Thanks for the great response from my last cake post. I thought I'd post another. When I had my babies, the baby shower cake consisted of a decorated sheet cake. And to tell you the truth, I still love the old fashioned kitschy cakes where everyone was served a little square piece of cake and you treasured and kept the little novelties on top for keepsakes.

Boy, have times changed! The cakes and showers are getting more elaborate by the year. And they are certainly getting bigger and more difficult to make. I get some crazy request. Everything from a Halloween wedding cake complete with Skelly's to Monkeys on an island!

I have done several of these belly cakes now (some had dresses on. But even so, who wants to cut this?) To each their own. This particular cake was chocolate and white. It is covered in an extraordinary amount of hand made marshmallow fondant and custom colored and decorated. I just do what the client wants. I'll make bellies all day long for the cost of these cakes : ).

A Long Morning and Sweet Finds...

“The hurrier I go, the behinder I get.”---Lewis Carroll This describes my morning, including a flat tire! I decide to just make a cup of instant coffee. If you know me, you know this is not me! YUK! But this morning I'm thinking there is only me and so making a half pot really isn't necessary. I need to drink 1 cup and then my water for the rest of the day. So I throw the water in the microwave, pull it out, mix in the coffee and throw in the creamer. It doesn't move. It's not melting...it's not hot. I didn't start it!

I run back to my desk to answer the phone and knock over my water...for the second time! I went ice skating across the kitchen floor on a piece of ice that was probably thrown to Yellow Dog (who loves ice). Apparently he missed it. Thanks for that. It was lots of fun : ). So it's been a long morning already. And I didn't sleep well last night.

For some reason I started thinking about Thanksgiving and I popped into Pottery Barn, on line of course and I found these. I do not need any more plates, but just look at these. I'm in love! So would you get bowls to top white or taupe plates or would you get salad plates to top white plates and use white bowls on top of that? You could also use the salads for dessert plates too. See, if you look hard enough you can find the value in anything. Here's where the problem always comes in...at minimum I would need 16 pieces. At maximum...well, I could not afford to buy that many at 4 for 50.00. If I could afford to buy that many, I wouldn't! This is why I always hated math! It never comes out like I want it to ; ).

Moving on...This is what our buffet looks like. Old silver pieces hang over it. Don't you love the pumpkin and candle display? I'm pretty sure I can go through and find enough pumpkins like these and I know I have the hurricanes and candles. I will mix in just a bit more color and my beautiful Pilgrims and Indians, but I love this concept!

Last but not least. This gravy boat is old and beautiful. But in my family everyone would burst out laughing if this is all there was. Right kids? It's kind of a standing joke here that gravy boats just aren't necessary. When it's on the table I get a "Are you kidding?" Yes, this is what I have to contend with! I do use one at the table, however it's the vat on the stove that gets the use. My gravy is a food group of it's own at Thanksgiving. I think I could just skip the soup and serve bowls for the gravy! I bring out a gorgeous turkey cooked to perfection and what does everyone ask..

"Is the gravy ready?"

This is the Halloween banner I made for my daughter Malissa. She loves it. It matches her Halloween decor. Even better my grandson Hayden loves it too.

She sent me a quick phone pic to show me how pretty it is with her lights. I love it!

Yesterday, my Grandson Hayden reminded me that the Halloween town isn't out yet. I have three towns, Easter, Halloween/ fall and Christmas. This is a really bad shot of the Halloween town because I had a camera in one hand and a hundred other things going on at that same time last year. I never got back to it for a better shot. And the fact that it is animated didn't help. It's hard to get a clear shot when everything is moving in a different direction.

Anyway, it's really fun. I see in this shot I actually cut some of the town off.Wow, this really is a bad shot, but you can get an idea of what I'm talking about. I think the kids favorite is the pirate ship. It also moves like it is going in and out of the water. Everything also has sound. There's a fun house, haunted gold mine, houses, and more. There's even a glowing moon and carnival going on. This town thing is a little expensive hobby I have, but it's so worth it when you see the kids faces. Maybe I will get a better shot of the Town and some pics of the house when I'm finished decorating this week. Ah, I just noticed the sweet little hand examining things.

It's cool and wonderful outside this morning. Happy October everyone! I played yesterday so no post. I had dinner plans and it was good for me to get out. I had a really nice time.

I hope everyone is enjoying the fall like weather. We're really in that transition period here. Not really fall yet... but we're just so thankful for the cool mornings and evenings.

Fall To Do List

Hard to believe this is the last day of September. I have to say this has been a surreal past couple of months. I'm glad to move on to a new month. I've been having a pity fest today in my honor : ). Missing my husband a lot lately. This year it will be 10 years since he passed. So I need to focus on my house right now and check some things off the fall to do list. I'm in the "change everything" mode when really all I need to do is a little fall cleaning... pitch out a few pieces of furniture that have been around too long. Make room for 2 new pieces and get into the fall spirit. In other words, "suck it up!""Booyah!"

This book shelf is almost like the one my husband built for me so many years ago. It covers one wall of our living room. We love books and it has a children's section which my Grand children are very particular about. They are book crazy too. I love this piece because he made it with his own hands. And because I could simply say I loved something and he made sure it happened. One day he came in with a tape measure and smiled and said what should it look like. And from "about this wide, about this tall and lots of shelves", a few days later, it was there. I painted it black a couple of years ago when I changed my decor. And then I saw this picture and fell in love with the off white. I think I have to go there. What do you think?

My daughters told me I could not redecorate anything again until I did my bedroom. They are bossy little things, but they are right. The voices of reason. I have not given my bedroom any attention and it needs it. I'm very fickle when it comes to decorating. I like color. I like naturals. Problem is, I like it for a few days. So I just need to stay with off whites and neutral colors. So when I get the urge to change I can just throw in some accents.

The guys at the station used to tease my husband about coming home to a new house every week. He always said he was careful when coming home in the dark because he never knew which day I'd rearrange the furniture : ). I'm not quite as bad now. There's just one more thing that's driving me crazy...a few years back I begged my daughters to do hand painted borders and they did. They were beautiful, but well now...I want them gone. Back to plain off white walls : { Last change I promise. (before I talk about the kitchen cabinets : ).

Love the Fall leaves too. You could make an imprint with a cookie cutter and then cut it out.

Wow, these are amazing! I might have to try this. I'm very partial to Cinderella pumpkins, but these are a favorite, too.

I really think the letters are beautiful, and I adore the lacy pumpkins, but too much work for me : /.

The Need for Bliss

Time for Yoga and Meditation. I need to de-stress and fast! I'm going to do 1 week of juicing and meditation. My system really needs energy and I really need to get on the ball and get back to my daily prayer. Something is very amiss in my life...in my family right now and I pray that things will get better soon. Yesterday, I almost resorted to returning cheep shots at someone after I felt I was unfairly attacked in an email. But, it didn't take long to realize the high road is best traveled. That is not who I am. These things aren't important. It's important to take responsibility for yourself and not blame others. It's important to keep your eye on the ball and do everything in your power to love your family and be the right kind of person for them. So the high road it is. So, breathe in breathe out....a hummmmm....

Time for Our Annual Fall Pumpkin Farm Trip

It's time for our fall pumpkin farm trip. There are so many wonderful farms to visit here in Texas and around the country for that matter. Most have an abundance of fun Autumnal things to do, like petting zoos, hay rides, pumpkin painting, mazes and so much more. Getting out into the fall air and having fun with the family is priceless. I also love the photo ops. The pic above was taken at Bill Bates (of the Dallas Cowboys fame) farm. And there are just so many others to visit. Below is a link to pumpkin farms all over the country. I hope you'll take the time in your busy world to gather the family and make wonderful memories. You can take a picnic lunch or most sell hot dogs, Hamburgers, iced cookies, cider and even yummy pumpkin donuts at some places. Whatever you do, don't forget the camera!

I'm still finding it hard to get into the spirit of Autumn. I've made a list of all the things I usually do to make this house a home that reflects the season upon us. And It never hurts to do a little on line shopping to get in the mood, either : ). I have to confess though, I have an abundance of fall decor, dishes, tableware, and well really, you name it. So it's hard to justify anything new. Also, my daughters are amazingly talented crafters, so I get the big eyes and a very strong "MOM, we can do this!" when I'm looking at something new for the Holiday seasons.

But that's okay, because I'm a DIY girl, anyway. I have this need for everyone to say, "Wow, you did this!" Yes, I love it. I have to admit. And at the same time, too many years of it and I'm a little tired of doing everything. But that little girl inside of me still wants that approval that says "It's the Best!" So here I go again this year.

First on the list is to warm up every corner of the house on a shoestring...

Soft and cozy in the living room...

Bring out the throws and fluff up the couch with fall colored pillows...

Accessorize, Accessorize, Accessorize...

PB or gather it all outside for not-a...

although the squirrels weren't happy...

I say buy these!

Pears and a hurricane...humm... remember the grocery store produce dept.when decorating.

And jars of all sizes with ribbons tied at the tops...

Oak leaves, a glass container and a candle. We have oak trees all over our property.

You do the math : )

Old pewter and silver plate filled with fruits and berries and mixed with candles...

Don't forget the bedroom. Tuck color everywhere.

Fill baskets with natuals like pinecones...

Fill the nooks and crannies with baskets, cornucopias, cake plates and bowls full of fall flair, like
gourds, fruits, dried botanicals, stems and branches...

Use white dishes. They match everything! Use colorful runners and napkins to make your statement...

Blast From the Past!

It's hard to believe that these pictures are 34 and 37 years old. Where did the time go. I cherish these photos. They were of such happy times. And we still treasure Christmas in this way. Although there are many more of us now. This is Malissa and Leslie's first Christmas. Malissa is in my arms very frustrated that the wrapping is not coming off faster. Hummm...she's still just a little impatient! Leslie, is as she still is today, very independent and just a tad stubborn! "She can and will do it herself!" I can't imagine where they got this from, not me! ; ) I think they got it from their Dad who is looking on very amused!

Christmas 1974

This picture is my baby boys first Christmas. He's so adorable. Sweet and even tempered. Just like his Mom. : ) He's still my baby and always will be. Even though he's a grown man with children of his own now. He's very happy with everything he got, especially the Pooh rocker. And as you can see, the girls are in a state of toy euphoria. Yes, the feeling you get as a kid when you get everything you want. : ) This is their 3rd. Christmas and my 2nd. year of dropping a path of munched on apples and carrots (that the reindeer left behind, of course!) and making lots of jiggle jangle noises just before daylight (as the sleigh flew away). My kids were convinced there was a Santa and you know, I think they still are : ).

I'm trying to decide what to do for this years Fall and Halloween theme. I've always made a wreath for our door for most of the holidays and seasons and I'm really out of ideas this year. The Halloween wreaths I love best, I made in the 80's. They were fun and timeless, but I need something fresh and totally different, without going too far out of the realm of what I love. I have been known to want to kick it up a bit too much : ). That's just my nature. But I actually know when to reel myself back in and focus. I've been looking around the web for ideas and I've found nothing for Halloween. The Fall wreaths are pretty, but still so much like what I always do. So for today I will ponder and hopefully tomorrow I'll have something to show you. Until then, enjoy these fall wreath ideas.

I was out and about with my son today, helping him get a canvas stretched. We (Jayson, Leslie and I) went to Michael's and then we actually ended up stretching it ourselves. It turned out great! I will post a pic later.

It is a canvas painting from Uganda, that my son's wife Brandi brought back to him. So anyway, my post for today is my beautiful daughters and piano man. Because 1. I failed to take a picture of the painting for a post and 2. I love these shots and I think they are tooo cute. 3. Also, I don't actually have a post ready because we were out playing today : ).

Annual Halloween Bash

Halloween just wouldn't be complete without our annual Halloween bash. Everyone dresses up and goes to the local church at the corner. Every year they put on a great carnival for all the kids complete with bounce houses, slides and old fashioned games inside. There's hot dogs, drinks and lots of sweet treats for everyone.

It's a very nice thing they do and it's become a tradition throughout the years with our family. We are small town and everybody knows everybody. All the kids that went for years, are all grown now bringing their kids. It's really very Saturday Evening Post. It's what small towns are all about : ).

When we return to our house for dinner and more fun, the usual suspects grace the table for a frightening meal. Back bones, bat wings, eye of newt ( glazed meat balls), yummy mummys, Dinosaur nuggets, and of course chips and dips. By the way, all of these recipes will be posted on Californa Girl's Southern Fried Fusion, Starting Monday, September 26th. I'll even post the snake for those of you who get into the darker side. Just teasing! So don't miss it!

Funny story...I saw a Halloween show with Paula Deen one year and decided to make the snake sandwich she made on the show. No one could eat it! It was too perfect. And when cut, we just couldn't go there. All that cheesy, meaty goodness was just too disgusting inside a snake.

I never do gore. I hate it. I like cute Halloween. I just thought the snake would be fun. NOT! So, we pretty much stick to tradition now. Today I'm working up a fun Halloween menu for this year's Party. Pumpkin Chili sounds so good right now!
